Mike Turner appointed captain of Steamer’s golf

The gods of golf appear to be smiling on the eyebrow-raising appointment of 50-year-old entrepreneur Mike Turner as the new Captain of Steamer’s Golf Society.

In a twist of fate, the painter, decorator and “home stylist” allegedly sank a hole-in-one within days of landing the plum Sai Kung position. Captain Mike, as he now likes to be known, scored the unlikely ace at Clearwater Bay Golf Club.

“It was witnessed, to be honest!” he said to doubters. One of his partners on the day said, “He shanked a wedge off his back foot, almost toppling over under his weight. The ball bounced off a rock or something before dribbling in.  I’m not sure if I want to play again.”

Captain Mike aims to raise standards at Steamer’s, Sai Kung’s oldest, most pedantic golf society. “He brings a refreshing ‘je ne sais quoi’ to a leadership role often stifled by strict adherence to rules and regulations,” said single-handicapper Tim Metcalfe, 44.

“Mike is known for his generous interpretation of the ‘gimme’, unconventional approach to free-drops and laissez-faire attitude to scoring, a perfect fit for the modern free-flowing game.”

John Winsor, 55, said: “Mike thinks out-of-the-box, both on the golf course and off it. He’s a born winner and his enthusiasm for accumulating as many prizes as possible is infectious.”

Over at Sai Kung Golf Society, Casa landlord Doug Marshall said: “Mike is at the top of his game. His ability to win prizes from seemingly unrecoverable positions is a testament to his rare talent.”

Mike’s two predecessors captaining Steamer’s were both ladies, a rare coincidence in golf. “Their feminine touch was pleasant enough, but to be honest I don’t think a Captain should play off ladies’ tees,” said Mike. “As a man’s man, I aim to bring dignity back.”
