Yacht club tries something new: race combined with “horror party”

For the first time Hebe Haven Yacht Club is combining its big charity event, the 24-hour dinghy race, with a Halloween carnival. The entire event starting at noon on October 31 will be open to the public, Summer Ng said.

The club pr executive issued a call for volunteers. “We need about 70,” Summer said.

Aiming to raise $100,000 for children’s charities, the club wants at least 500 people to take part. Non-members will be able to eat and drink at the club, paying cash for chits.

Summer said attractions will include a “horror party”, magic show, face painting, live bands and dancing. She said organisers are discussing whether to have “horror food”.

About 50 dinghies will sail on a set course for 24 hours with the event winding up at 4pm the next day. Volunteers are needed for lap counting, manning safety boats, acting as information officers, and issuing chits for cash. They will find various ways of extracting money from you for the charities, led by the Children’s Cancer Foundation. Last year $40,000 was raised and the club is raising its sights this year.
