Thirteen-year-old singer Ocean Davis will appear in Sai Kung with Monstarz band on December 12. Take a look at this Youtube clip (page 1) and you will see the teenagers performing the Gloria Gaynor hit, “I Will Survive”.
Ocean lives on Sai Kung Road with her parents Leonor and Chris Davis. She has been singing with Montstarz since she was 11. It’s a school band formed about four years ago at Tseung Kwan O’s Yuen Yuen No.3 Secondary School.
In her first year at the high school, Ocean wanted to join the band and was told to go away. “They said I was too young. Then they heard me sing and I was invited in.”
The December 12 event, to which the public is invited, will be at highly rated Lee Siu Yam Memorial School on the waterfront. The school will be hosting its Christmas open day with a play and musical shows. Monstarz band is scheduled to do a 20-minute gig. Ocean said she expects they will perform “Jingle Bells”, “Santa Claus is Coming to Town” and other traditional numbers.
Trained weekly by a musicians’ group, Joyous Foundation, Monstarz is surprisingly active for a school band. They have appeared at Cyberport, charity benefits, housing estates, road safety shows and competitions. Ocean’s singing talent is natural, Dad Chris Davis said. Now she is learning the guitar.
