Everyone in Sai Kung and Clearwater Bay is invited to the Hebe Haven Yacht Club on March 19, according to Shentin Elson, sailing centre coordinator. The club’s open days rank among the most attractive events on the local calendar.

You will be able to eat and drink at the club’s bars and restaurants paying by voucher or Octopus, Shentin said. Local food and drink vendors such as Chipp In will have booths you can sup at. This is in what the club calls the “Event Village” which stretches from the Garden Bar across the car park and out towards the sea on the boating centre’s forecourt. Many charities such as Sailing for the Disabled will stage displays in booths. Local businesses such as Winerack will also be there, in some cases donating the day’s profits to charity.

During the event from 10am to 5pm free sailing and kayaking including coaching will be offered. Hong Kong’s teenage sailors who represent the territory in local races and overseas will hold a “meet and greet” with the public who attend. A cheque presentation will be made to the winners of last year’s 24-hour charity race.

For the first time there will be a car boot sale. People pay $200 for a table on which to display their wares. Shentin said 20 have so far booked. The HHYC will also stage a sale of sailing and kayaking clothing and gear at near-cost prices.
