A new hero is emerging in Sai Kung. Carol Chan stood on a street corner on Saturday with a microphone telling everyone who stopped to listen about the calamity befalling our community. Over-development is wrecking what was once called the back garden of Hong Kong.

Carol was supported by her husband, their poodle Milky and volunteers from Sai Kung Planning Concern Front. On the pavement near Burger Deli they laid out a home-made display detailing the developments, ongoing and pending.

The arch-enemy is New World with its 769-flat project planned for Sha Ha, Carol said. It will be three times larger than The Mediterranean next door.

While Carol addressed the weekend passersby, James collected signatures on a protest petition.

Sai Kung Planning Concern Front has only a handful of members, but is having a big impact. Saturday was their third street protest exhibition. You can find them on Facebook.

A former high school teacher, Carol describes herself now as a housewife. She is a charming lady who says she is 80 per cent deaf. While you talk to her she watches your lips.
