In reply to our story on 7 January entitled “District Council puts up $300,000 for small restaurant promotion and walks into barrage of criticism” we received the following letter from the Council Secretariat.

Dear BUZZ,
The Working Group on Tourism and Economic Development of the Sai Kung District Council (SKDC) has made continuous efforts in promoting local economy and tourism of Sai Kung for years. The Working Group discussed at its meeting held on 2 November 2017 the planning of a community event to promote tourism and the characteristics of the many different cuisines available in Sai Kung. SKDC has subsequently received a funding application from the Sai Kung Joint Preparatory Committee on Promoting Commerce and Tourism (Joint Preparatory Committee) to organise an event named “Sai Kung Carnival 3.3” at Sai Kung Town Tin Hau Temple Plaza and Man Yee Basketball Courts on 3 March 2018. The objectives of the programme are to promote the attractiveness of Sai Kung as a tourism hub and to enhance its local economy through the promotion of a wide variety of cuisines available in Sai Kung, including village style snacks, seafood, deserts, etc. As we understand, the programme is not meant for promoting any individual restaurants. The funding application has been approved by SKDC after scrutiny by its Finance and Administration Committee.
According to the implementation schedule submitted by the Joint Preparatory Committee, the event promotion period lasts from 20 December 2017 to 2 March 2018. For further details of the programme including the liaison arrangement with individual restaurants, please contact the secretariat of the Joint Preparatory Committee at 2792 1762 direct.
Thank you for your attention in this matter.
