UST students place second in China aircraft design contest

Prototype of amphibious two-seater to be constructed with AVIC

Five students at the University of Science and Technology have placed second out of 153 teams in a China-wide aircraft design competition.

They created a two-seater amphibious aircraft called “Soaring Dragon”and built a 1:10 scale model for the competition organised by the Aviation Industry Corporation of China.  The students will join a team from the UST and the AVIC to construct a two-seater light aircraft prototype based on the model.

They are Jeff Chan, Leo Zhu, Michelle Jia, Choi Chi Cheung and Xie Yu Yang, all students in the Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Department.

“Soaring Dragon” is unusually designed with hydrofoils instead of wheels for operation off water. The wings can fold for road transport.
