The Friends of Sai Kung AGM was told the society has only 26 paid-up members. This despite the fact the annual fee is only $100, dropping to $50 for juniors and seniors.
A committee member said the low membership was due to apathy in the community and low awareness of FSK’s efforts to preserve Sai Kung’s way of life.
Three new committee members were elected: Tom Goetz (operations) his wife Lauralynn (activities) and Pat Malone (secretarial). FSK especially wants more Chinese members. Only one is prominent: Geraldine Young.
In his report re-elected Chairman John Wright said FSK had had a busy year scrutinising developers’ plans, fighting to preserve the environment, monitoring the Town Planning Board and lobbying the Government, which just ignores pressure groups like FSK. John said the society’s alliance with Save Our Country Parks was effective as were its contacts with about 30 other NGOs.
Barry Hill, a transport engineer, updated the meeting on the progress towards widening Hiram’s Highway, which some committee members oppose, but not all. Barry said Stage One construction had been awarded to a mainland contractor, which will build a new bridge with four lanes on the seaward side of the existing Ho Chung bridge. The highway will be widened to dual carriageway from there past the marina. Stage Two (Pak Wai to Sai Kung) is not due to be started until 2020.
Barry warned that a new sewage plant planned for Ho Chung will negatively impact residents.
Guy Shirra is back again on the committee after grumbling at last year’s AGM about the frustrations of working long hours with little to show for all the effort and less appreciation. Now Vice Chairman, Guy said he plans monthly FSK quizzes at Steamers.
Tried to join ages ago but was rejected.
not surprised, when you write to a committee member and they can’t be bothered even replying !!!!
