The incomparable sound of highland bagpipes will rattle the eaves of Po Tung Road on Monday 11th as The Diner stages its opening party. The Hong Kong Pipe Band will be stars of the show.
Assistant Manager Jessica Drechsler said the party will be from 6 to 8pm with free ordinary (translation to American: regular) drinks and snacks.
Jessica is a dog lover so we asked if dogs would be welcome. She said of course, but due to Hongkong’s antiquated regulations, they will have to stay at the door or on the forecourt. How amusing, we said, if when the pipers hit the high notes, the dogs join in, yowling.
Hong Kong Pipe Band performing at Carnegie’s where The Diner’s owner Marcus Thompson is, or was, a shareholder. We understand it has changed hands.
Hosts for the evening, along with Jessica, will be Marcus and Sarah Thomson, The Diner’s owners, and Manager Peter Hughes.
After 8pm all ordinary drinks — wines, vodka, gin, whisky, San Miguel beer — will be $25. This is the same deal the restaurant offers on Wednesdays after 5pm to pull in customers. Week-days can be slow so The Diner is now promoting two-course lunches for $98.
‘antiquated regulations to keep dogs out of restaurants’? You must be mad, or ignorant, to think that such regs are antiquated. Absolutely keep dogs out of food prep and eating places (except the seeing eye helper dogs).
