Yacht club gears up for one of most attractive events on Sai Kung's social calendar

Hebe Haven Yacht Club is calling for volunteers and stall holders as it gears up for one of the most attractive events on the Sai Kung calendar: the 24-hour dinghy race benefiting children’s charities. The club will be open to the public on October 21 — 22 and it will be heaving with a carnival atmosphere as youngsters race on the water and party-goers revel on shore. A colourful Race Village is created with stalls selling food and drink and promoting charities.

About 2000 people turn up over the weekend. In the 15 years since the event began, the club claims it has raised over $11 million for charities. One of just four 24-hour yacht races worldwide, the event is the only one of its kind in SE Asia. The racing starts at 1400hrs on Saturday and runs until the same time on Sunday. Racing crews change regularly. The little boats zip around, if there is a good wind, on a course close to the shore so spectators can watch as they party.
The Race Village is extensive covering most of the club’s forecourt and hard standing. It is a vibrant scene with smiling faces everywhere. Everyone seems to have a good time. Many people in wheelchairs turn up because the HHYC has charities that arrange sailing for the disabled, notably Sailability.

The club is now accepting applications for stalls in the Race Village over the two days. Supporters include Ali Oli, Rugby Tots, Winerack, Print House, Bling Fling, and Pagoda. Volunteers are sought for various roles: lap counters, race officers, dock marshals, safety boat crews and general helpers.
