A contractor will start soon widening Sai Sha Road to four lanes in advance of an immense increase of traffic because of the Sun Hung Kai development. The contractor, Sanfield-Gammon Construction JV Company Ltd, has set up a large site office between Che Ha and Tai Cheung near Sai Sha Road. The section of the main road linking Sai Kung and Ma On Shan to be widened runs from Sai O village to Tai Tung village. The project is expected to take five years.

It is hard to get your head around the huge scale of the Sun Hung Kai project and imagine the impact of it. Here is another way of looking at it: Local police chief CIP Daniel Tsang says his district covers 45,000 people.

The large site office

If you assume an average of three people per flat the SHK development with 9500 apartments amounts to a whole new Sai Kung town with 28,500 people and their cars. The SHP project is projected to take eight years to complete.

The Sai Sha Road widening to dual two-lane carriageway is commonsense. It is also another example of the Government looking after its cronies, the handful of super-rich families who control property development in this rotten city.

Also included in Sanfield-Gammon’s contract:

  • Construction of a new road from Tai Tung village to Tseng Tau village
  • Building of three roundabouts, one at the west of Ma Kwu Lam village, one near Tseng Tau village and another at Tai Tung village
  • Construction of three footbridges near Nai Chung village, Kwun Hang village and Ma Kwu village
  • Related works such as drainage and sewerage, landscaping, bus-bays, and rebuilding of a car-park and bus terminus plus erection of noise barriers.

The project is expected to be completed in the second quarter of 2023.
