A 31-year-old man drowned in a diving accident during a night dive off Bate Head (Tuen Tsui), Sai Kung, last night. He was diving with seven friends when they noticed him missing around 12:30 am. After searching the area his dive mates found him floating upside down.

Marine Police were called, who gave first aid, and then took him to Wong Shek Pier, where he was transferred by ambulance to Prince of Wales Hospital. Unfortunately he died just after arrival.

Bate Head is classified as suitable for experienced divers only. Monk Island is close by and forms a channel around 10 m deep; the shores are quite rocky and the area has strong tides and the wind causes high waves. The area is not used for dive training, according to The Hong Kong Underwater Association. They also recommend using full dive gear when diving in this area, as it is not suitable for snorkeling, and definitely the use of lights for such a night dive.

Police are investigating the incident, but do not suspect foul play at this time.
