Government vows to crack down on tourists damaging ecology of Sai Kung islands

The Environment and Ecology Bureau (EEB) announced yesterday (5/10) the government will strengthen interdepartmental patrols and law enforcement. during the National Day Golden Week, after Greenpeace alerted them that visitors to Sharp Island in Sai Kung were littering, lighting fires, and disturbing marine life.

The EEB stated that it has partnered with the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD), the police, and other departments to increase patrols in the waters around Sai Kung for the remainder of the Golden Week. They will also dispatch personnel to Sharp Island to clean up litter and distribute leaflets urging visitors to protect the environment and marine life. The AFCD will also closely monitor the coral and coastal ecology of Sharp Island. The EEB noted a recent increase in visitor numbers to popular locations in country parks, and will further strengthen ecological conservation measures, including a review of pedestrian and traffic control measures.

Furthermore, officials are distributing leaflets in multiple languages to visitors at the Sai Kung Pier and the island, promoting awareness about ecological conservation. 

To strengthen publicity, the government will disseminate relevant information outlining the relevant penalties and calling for the cleanup of marine debris and oil spills on social media.
