The two local Saigon Pho restaurants are run by the Chan family who have deep roots in Sai Kung. Wilson and his sons Joe, David, and Terrence lived for some time in Canada where they saw the popularity of Vietnamese noodle restaurants. When the Chans moved back to Hong Kong they decided to open Canadian-style Vietnamese noodle places. “We wanted to give something back to Sai Kung,” Joe said.
The restaurants are almost back to back, one at Shop 16, Sai Kung Building, 42 – 56 Fuk Man Road and the other at Shop 2 of the same building in the King Man St alleyway. Here you will find some of the freshest, healthiest food in Sai Kung. The highlights include:
SPECIALITY PHO: This is their signature dish and it is only $68. The broth is boiled for 10 to 12 hours with 12 herbs and slices such as lemon grass, star anise and cinnamon. When the broth is steaming at its tastiest US beef, onions, ginger, carrots, basil and peppers are added.
SPRING ROLLS: The ingredients are pork, rice vermicelli, fresh taro, herbs and fish sauce all encased in rice wrappers. Put a fresh lettuce leaf around a roll, dip it into Thai sauce and “the taste buds will be well satisfied,”as one foodie wrote. Only $50.
SHRIMP AND CHICKEN SALAD: Another signature dish with local shrimps and chicken slices, cabbage, pickles, carrot and peanuts. $60.
BANH MI SANDWICH: Toasted crusty bread stuffed with fragrant meats, mayonnaise, pickled carrots, radish, cucumber, chilli and fresh cilantro. $68.
As you can see the prices are very reasonable. “We set the prices purposely with Sai Kung people in mind,” Joe said.
“I ate there with my wife,” Trevor Bailey said. “She had Specialty Pho, I had spring rolls and we shared a plate of choi sum. The bill came to only $110.”
Local resident Catherine Chong, a soup noodle foodie, said, “My favourite. Saigon Pho is the best Vietnamese noodle place in Sai Kung.”
