Good news for shoppers in Sai Kung. The monopoly of A.S.Watson on large supermarkets in the centre of town is about to end. Next week U-Select will move into larger premises next door to Pet Central. According to staff it will be at least 2x larger. There will also be a wider selection of food, and a much wider range of Tesco branded products from UK. A sneak peek inside the door showed wall-to-wall freezer cabinets, as well as nearly full shelves. Staff told BUZZ that the shop should have been open this week, but there had been problems with the electricity supply to the freezers.
U-Select is a chain of supermarkets jointly owned by China Resources Vanguard with the UK supermarket giant Tesco. At least one third of the products sold in the stores come from Tesco. China Resources Vanguard operates in Hong Kong under the retail names Vanguard, VanGO and Voi_la!, as well as U-Select. It is a state-owned company that, after it absorbed the Tesco branded supermarkets in China, is the third largest supermarket chain in the mainland, as well as in Hong Kong.
