A triple bill of music and dance is on offer this coming weekend combining the talents of the Hong Kong Ballet and the Hong Kong Philharmonic. On Friday, Saturday and Sunday you will be able to see at the Cultural Centre three ballets back to back, “The Rite of Spring”, “Chroma” and “The Year of the Rabbit”.
In no particular order:
“CHROMA”, originally choreographed by the Royal Ballet’s Wayne McGregor, won him a Laurence Olivier Award. He imagined it as electric physicality in cool white minimalism. It is a dance that “seems to take place in a heaven of fiercely committed struggle”, according to an NYT critic. Expect extreme physicality.
“THE YEAR OF THE RABBIT” by Justin Peck is structured around the Chinese zodiac synchronised to the song cycles of composer Sufjian Stevens. The seven sections of the ballet are named after animals and “our Lord”.
“THE RITE OF SPRING” presents rituals based on pagan myths celebrating the advent of spring in harsh northern Europe climates. A young girl is chosen as a sacrificial victim and she dances herself to death. The dancers perform to the famous score by Igor Stravinsky and the energetic rhythms of the rock band The White Stripe. In Hong Kong the ballet has been recast by Yuh Egami and Ricky Hu Song Wei with sets by Leocampo Yuen.
This show by the Hong Kong Ballet and the Hong Kong Philharmonic runs from 31 May through 2 June. There are evening shows on Friday and Saturday and matinees on Saturday and Sunday. Tickets are $1000 (“selected VIPs”) to $140. More details available at http://www.hkphil.org/eng/concerts_and_ticket/concerts/concertdetail.jsp?id=713
