If you want a nice quiet drink in the morning it would be best to give The Picture House a miss between 9:00 am and 11:00 am. The place will be full of babies and toddlers. Bubs in Pubs is a new place for parents and caregivers to meet and play. The concept is a free-with-purchase drop-in soft play area.

The project was initiated by Hannah McLeod and Katie Larson. According to Hannah, she and another local mum, Katie, were sick of walking around Sai Kung in either the heat or rain with no where to go. There are a few scheduled classes and a very small area in the local library but nowhere you could just drop in and have a rest/play – and coffee.

They organised a small survey on the Sai Kung Mummies Facebook page and received 125 responses. They then added some questions relevant to local businesses so they could use the data to prove there were opportunities and found that 87% of respondents said they would be very likely or likely to visit a drop-in soft play area in a local business with 74% saying they would visit 1-2 times per week. The survey showed that the hours 9:00 am-11:00 am Monday to Friday seemed to be the most popular time parents and caregivers were looking for something to do.

Armed with this data they then approached Kim Minards who is first and foremost a local parent and also the Managing Director of the Enoteca Group who own The Conservatory and The Picture House in Sai Kung.

Thankfully, Kim got it straight away and ‘Bubs in Pubs @ The Picture House’ was born! Hannah and Katie then got some of the parents together for a focus group and from there it all came together rather quickly. The chef worked up a new healthy menu aimed at kids (Marmite on toast proving to be a firm favourite) and a few trials were done to test the toys and space before officially opening Monday 10 June.

The group is now coming into week 3 and so far it’s so good. It’s becoming a popular meeting place for parents and caregivers in Sai Kung and there have been lots of positive comments.
