A daring robbery took place in the centre of Sai Kung early this morning (29 October) when two men and a woman disabled a car in Fuk Man Road and stole $90,000 from the driver. Their getaway car was chased by the victim which then crashed. The robbers then held up a taxi at knife point and escaped to Sheung Shui.
Just before 5:00 am, police received a report from a man who said that when driving his Land Rover car from the pier, he noticed that there was something wrong with the right rear wheel. He got out of the car to take a look and was set upon by two men and a woman. They pointed a knife at him and stole $90,000 he was carrying, which was to be used for wages.
According to eye-witness reports, the driver of green Land Rover was the owner of a local cake shop, Sai Kung Cafe and Bakery (西貢咖啡餅店), who had parked near Sai Kung Pier. When he started the car he found it was not driving correctly – the rear right wheel was found to be loose, so the driver alighted and saw that the wheel screws were all missing. He was attacked when he went to ask to borrow tools from nearby shop. The robbers tried to flee in a Toyota seven-seater car but were chased by the victim. The driver lost control of the vehicle and ran into the wall of the flower bed by Wai Man Street. The robbers ran away into Chan Man Street, and hijacked a taxi at knife point to flee the scene.
The police finally found the taxi near the Hung Kiu New Village, Sheung Shui and are now trying to trace the culprits. The taxi driver was injured in both hands and was sent to the Tseung Kwan O Hospital for treatment by the ambulance. The police are studying the many CCTV systems in the area for clues.
