“Fleabag”, arguably the greatest sexy, emotional comedy of recent years, opens at AMC cinemas in March. The award-winning show written and performed by Phoebe Waller-Bridge is over-sexed, emotionally raw, self-obsessed and you may leave the cinema in a sobbing mess. Here are some quotes from “Fleabag”:
- “I spent most of my adult life using sex to deflect from the screaming void inside my empty heart.”
- “Love is awful, painful, frightening. It’s all any of us want and it’s hell when we get there.”
- “I’m not obsessed with sex, I just can’t stop thinking about it. The performance of it. The drama of it. The moment you realise someone wants your body.”
In the 107-minute film Fleabag’s family and friendships are under strain and her guinea-pig cafe is struggling to survive. Desperate, tears-streaming down her face, Fleabag finds she has nothing to lose. This one-woman show captures the forever confused, sporadically emotional and slightly quirky adults we all pretend to be.
The Daily Telegraph wrote the first three minutes of BBC’s Fleabag are the funniest opening sequence of any comedy ever made. “Here is a character as sexually depraved as she is hilarious as she is emotionally troubled — and audiences have fallen for her en masse.”
