New butcher and delicatessen will prove hot competition for others in Sai Kung

The Wanchai branch of Feather and Bone

Feather and Bone, a new butcher, delicatessen and perhaps restaurant, is close to opening at Sai Kung’s Man Yee Square, facing the basketball court. The photos here were taken by a BUZZ team member who visited the Wanchai branch for breakfast yesterday. Feather and Bone has eight locations on the island and in the New Territories, including at the Mt Pavillia development in Clear Water Bay.

The new store will sell meat and fresh produce, but won’t have dining tables like some of the other F&B places, because it is too small.

From time to time the New Zealanders and Australians living in Sai Kung and Clearwater Bay go into a panic. They can’t find Vegemite anywhere. The salty brewer’s leftover yeast extract full of Vitamin B is addictive and people brought up Down Under can’t go more than a week without a fix. The opening of Feather and Bone will allow them to calm down.

The new store will sell meat and fresh produce and perhaps have a few dining-in tables — it is smaller than the Wanchai store. The decor of the latter has a professional look and if you want to get a feel of the management quality, take a look at the toilets. Well appointed, clean and decorated with lit candles by the washbasin.

The website portrays the decor as chartreuse greens, warm wood, traditional typefaces, metal butcher’s lights and nostalgic subway titles “paying homage to a mid-century neighbourhood shopping experience when customers had a personal relationship with their local grocer”. The prose is florid, but justified.

The Wanchai Feather and Bones has a large dining area, but the Man Yee Square site is smaller

The Wanchai Feather and Bones is an attractive place and the Man Yee Square store, with its high-visibility location, will doubtlessly be a serious competitor of the town’s other butcheries and delicatessens.
