Police chased a seven-seat van for more than 20 kilometres after it fled a police stop in Ngau Chi Wan. It was finally intercepted in Clear Water Bay after hitting several cars. The male driver was arrested and the female passenger fled.
Police inspect the van with the suspect
The incident happened at 11:00 pm last night (22/4). When the enforcement and control team of the East Kowloon Traffic Department was patrolling Lung Cheung Road, Ngau Chi Wan, they found a white Toyota seven-passenger vehicle illegally crossing the double white line. The driver fled the scene and headed for Sai Kung. The chase lasted for 20 kilometres. At the junction of Clear Water Bay Road and Silver Cape Road in Clear Water Bay, a police car chasing the suspects was unable to stop and collided with a taxi. The suspect van then hit a private car when it reached the vicinity of Clear Water Bay Country Club on Po Toi O Village Road.
Police aid their injured colleague
According to reports from the scene, the driver reversed the vehicle in an attempt to escape, hitting two police cars and injuring a policeman. One police officer drew a gun in an attempt to stop the driver but the van successfully broke through the police block and was driven back to Kowloon in the opposite direction. The two sides started the chase again. When they reached Tai Au Mun Road and the Second Clear Water Bay Beach the suspect car eventually crashed. The people in the car were not injured, and managing to escape from the crashed vehicle, they fled. The male driver ran for about 400 metres before he was arrested.
Police arresting the suspect
It is understood that the registration of the vehicle involved had expired in July last year; the arrested driver tested positive for “ice” after a quick oral fluid test on the spot, and was charged with “reckless driving” and “drug driving” among others. Police brought dogs to search the car, and also launched an operation to search for the fugitive woman. The injured policeman suffered minor shoulder injuries and was sent to the hospital for treatment.
