Celebrate things Indian: get along to literary discussions at Asia Society this Sunday

“Sing the song of celestial love, O singer! May the divine fountain of eternal grace and joy enter your soul.” This fortnight we celebrate things Indian: Diwali, the festival of light, has just past with its spiritual victory of light over darkness, good over evil and knowledge over ignorance. Later this week we have India by the Bay*, a celebration of the subcontinent’s arts and culture. On Sunday 10 November at the Asia Society, you may attend discussions with renowned authors on matters Indian during their Words on Water: India by the Bay, held in collaboration with the Hong Kong International Literary Festival.

At the society’s Miller Theatre you will be able to hear Vikas Swarup in discussion with Jim Hildebrandt. Vikas Swarup wrote the book that became the film “Slumdog Millionaire”. The book he will be talking about is “The Girl with Seven Lives”, a tale of a young girl’s odyssey across India kidnapped by a gunman.

John Zubryzycki will be in discussion with Fionnuala McHugh about her book “Dethroned: The Downfall of India’s Princely States.” it tells the stories of inimitable characters such as Lord Mountbatten. Jawaharlal Nehru, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and VP Menon and the decline of the Princely states and unification of India.

Aarathi Prasad talks to Zuraidah Ibrahim about “Silk: A History in Three Metamorphoses”. Dr Prasad is an eminent doctor-author who also wrote “Like a Virgin: How Science is Re-designing the World of Sex”.

To hear these literary discussions buy a $225 ticket per session and turn up at the Miller Theatre, Asia Society Hong Kong, on 10 November in time for the show beginning at 9:30 am and going on to 1:30 pm.

*India by the Bay is Hong Kong’s only annual, week-long celebration of Indian arts, culture and heritage. Each year, the festival brings the soul of India and its unique diversity to the city’s shores, with a curation featuring music, dance, theatre, cinema, literature, wellness, fashion and food. For nearly a decade, India by the Bay has served as a cultural bridge – engaging and entertaining the people of Hong Kong and fostering conversations and collaborations. The festival is co-presented by Teamwork Arts and the Asia Society Hong Kong Center. In its 9th edition, India by the Bay is reaffirming its commitment to exploring the arts as a powerful conduit for connection.
