A fatal traffic accident occurred on Hiram’s Highway yesterday evening (4/7) resulting in one death and two injuries.
Police announced today that at 6:41 pm yesterday, a 63-year-old male driver was driving a taxi along Sai Kung Highway towards Sai Kung when, near Mang Kung Wo Road, he allegedly crossed the line and crashed into a KMB bus, route 92, driven by a 24-year-old male driver.
The dashcam footage circulating online shows that the taxi suddenly crossed the opposite lane when it arrived at the scene, and the bus was unable to brake in time and collided head-on.
Following the accident, the taxi’s front end was severely damaged, and the driver and two passengers were initially trapped and required rescue by firefighters. The 63-year-old taxi driver sustained multiple serious injuries and was taken to Tseung Kwan O Hospital in a coma, where he was pronounced dead at 8:32 pm. The 50-year-old male passenger suffered injuries to his hand and shoulder and was taken to Prince of Wales Hospital; the 47-year-old female passenger suffered a chest injury and was taken to Queen Elizabeth Hospital. Both were conscious upon arrival at the hospital.
KMB stated that preliminary investigations indicate the taxi was travelling in the opposite lane when it allegedly crossed the line and collided with the bus. The company will cooperate with the police investigation into the cause of the accident.
Police have handed the case over to the Special Investigation Team of the East Kowloon Regional Traffic Department for follow-up investigation. The cause of the accident is still under investigation. Police urge anyone who witnessed the accident or has any information to contact investigators at 3661 0262.
Traffic in the area was delayed for nearly two hours as a result of the accident.
