On 26 September well-known investor Lam Yat-Ming and his teammates from the Hong Kong Yacht Club participated in the “Sai Kung Coastal Challenge,” a 41-kilometre long-distance rowing endurance race. Near waters off High Island Reservoir, Sai Kung, he wrote on his social media page, a blue and white yacht suddenly accelerated from a hundred metres away, its bow pointing directly at the rowing team, and passed by them at extremely close range.
According to a video posted by Lam, a group of six people were rowing when a yacht passed by at extremely close range. Whitecaps rose from the water, and the small boat swayed violently due to the wake, creating a perilous situation. Lam described how the yacht suddenly accelerated and headed directly towards them.
In response to media inquiries, the Marine Department stated that, according to records, it has not yet received any reports of related incidents. However, the Marine Department emphasised that it will proactively investigate the incident and will take legal action against anyone found to have violated maritime laws such as the Ships and Port Control Ordinance.
