All residents may join in sports, arts and learning at Hong Kong Academy, manager says

hkaYou do not need to have a child studying at the Hong Kong Academy to use its facilities or take part in sports, arts and learning, Heather Linhardt, Commercial Development and Sustainability Manager, said. All residents of Sai Kung and Clearwater Bay of any age are welcome to join in the school’s programmes.

Heather said residents can participate by:

  • Getting involved with extended learning programmes that cover English language, app and website development, painting, drama and other subjects.
  • Taking part in learning events in the theatre with partners such as the Royal Geographic Society and other intellectual groups.
  • Attending musical events, plays and comedy nights open to the  community.
  • Partnering with Hong Kong Academy to arrange artistic and intellectually stimulating events.
  • Renting facilities from the 350-seat theatre to the soccer pitch to the rehearsal and conference rooms.
  • Visiting community events on the premises such as Sunday Sessions and Sunday Market.
  • Joining in activities with Academy-supported organisations such as Sai Kung Buffalo Watch, Plastic Free Seas and Nature Conservancy.hka2

“The Academy aims to be a community-based organisation,” Heather said. “We want to interact with residents — the flow of benefits should be two-way.”

The Hong Kong Academy is non-profit.  The cost of renting facilities will vary according to event and type of organisation. The campus is home on a school day to about 650 students, boys and girls. Headed by Stephen Dare, the faculty teaches children from pre-school through primary, middle and high school.  Students graduate with an international baccalaurette diploma, which means they are acceptable to universities in 120 countries.  Run by a charitable foundation, the school has been open in its 6220 sq metre premises in Sai Kung for a bit more than a year.
