“Horror house” at dawn: splendid potential

A new Tai Mong Tsai Rd house with a knock-out sea view that rose out of the shell of an historic village hall  is now on the market for $78 million.  It’s a house every Sai Kung resident knows because it can be seen from the main road to the country park.

At 199 Wong Chuk Wan, the property was dubbed by one resident the “horror house”, because of poor renovation.  This is not justified because a deep-pocketed new owner with imagination could turn it into one of the most splendid properties in Sai Kung. If a mainlander will pay $130 million for a seafront house of only three storeys at Sheung Sze Wan…

The current owner Vampio Ltd offers to lease it at $150,000.

“Nobody is going to rent it,” one agent said, “because you would have to spend a fortune renovating.  But you never know what the investment banker-types might do.”

The house on a hillock overlooks the sea and islands of Sai Kung harbour.  It is one of the best waterfront locations available. The 20,000 sq ft garden has several levels and could be landscaped with a swimming pool, bbq area, lawns and gardens. It’s walled and gated.

From the main road the house looks narrow because it was built on the foundations of a village hall that faced the sea. Adjacent is the charming Tai Mong Tsai temple with its statues amongst the mangroves. Vampio Ltd also built the new white houses close to Tai Mong Tsai Rd, Sha Kok Mei.
