Matt takes new book to schools and finds eager audiences

Launching at Sai Kung Dymocks attracts wine guzzlers

Sai Kung resident Matt Cooper has launched his second book at our soon-to-be-ex-Dymocks (after the chain’s Hong Kong exit the brand is to be changed).

Black Rain Day follows a young girl as she goes on an adventure through Hong Kong’s diverse habitats with talking animals.

“I’d learnt a lot from my first book launch,” said Matt. “Mainly that we needed to have more wine because Sai Kungers are a thirsty bunch. Luckily Ursula (Huber) from Dymocks kindly supplied it.’

Matt believes that to make a book a success, what happens after the book is in print is at least as important as what happens before. “I stumbled upon a link with schools with my first book, Lost in Hong Kong, as its transport theme slotted in with their studies. I was asked to visit a few schools and realised that it was a great opportunity to share the book. So this time round I made a conscious effort to make the book’s theme at least a little educational so that I could offer something to schools again. I’ve already done a few school visits and as well as reading my book I’ve talked about Hong Kong habitats and the pressures that humans put on them.”

Matt said that the book launch was well attended and that everyone made the most of the free wine. “In some ways I’m one of the few people who’s pleased that the weather’s turned so rainy as it makes the book seem more relevant. Although I guess the bad weather also means that no one will be able to get to the shops to buy it!”
