Wiser Psyche Chong designs gaudi-inspired security doors

sosoul1Psyche Chong found her artistic sensibilities offended by window bars and grill doors when she moved into an O Tau flat.  She asked the landlady if she could take them out. Then Psyche got burgled, losing valuables worth about $200,000.

Now she’s bought her own flat a wiser Psyche has put in window bars and grill doors, while letting her artistic tastes loose. She has designed white grill doors inspired by Gaudi. “I can’t build a house like Gaudi’s Casa Pedrera, but I can borrow his gate.”

Psyche said, “Security bars make our homes like a cage. We prevent strangers on one hand. We prevent nature on the other.”

Her self-designed white doors are made of wood enfolded in steel with mosquito nets inside. Constructed in Sai Kung, they cost less than ones you would buy off the rack, she said. For window bars she shopped around, choosing rare designs. “The window bars look like an elf putting his face to the glass.”

An accomplished artist featured in these pages previously, Psyche said, “I do think art can be infused into daily life, merged into the environment.”

Her paintings will be on display next month at the Sheung Wan Civic Centre. She will exhibit about 50 works, but not sell them. The dates of the show were not available at time of writing, but you can find details on Facebook if you look up Psyche Chong.
