Sexual abuse of children is something most people neither believe nor talk about, yet the number of reported cases is rising.  In 2015, over one-third of the child abuse cases were related to sexual abuse. Recently, police have arrested a child sexual predator living in Tseung Kwan O. The arrested man made use of rewards and mobile games to attract boys aged 7 to 10. He was charged with “possessing child pornography” and “indecent assault”.  The case has aroused parents’ concern over child sexual abuse in our neighborhood. What can government and parents do?

Police should conduct more frequent patrols and stop and question any person behaving suspiciously in order to deter proliferation of paedophiliac activities.

How about parents? Education both at home and at school is one of the keys to a solution. Yet parents seldom talk about sex seriously to their kids. Many consider sex as something shameful and dirty. They wish to maintain the image of the child as innocent and asexual.

Being open-minded can be really tough sometimes. But being a good listener with children will  improve communication and build a positive relationship and mutual trust.

Nevertheless, we should understand that the Internet is a big up-coming challenge for both parents and authorities. Teenagers are susceptible to sexual abuse pitfalls as predators exploit the popularity of social networking to target victims.

If something happens to your kid, remember that the perpetrator is to blame — not you and of course not the kid. People say parenting is the hardest job on Earth. But it’s never too late to learn.
