Summer garage sales will be held at the University of Science and Technology on June 4 and 11, Coordinator Jean Hudson said. Jean is something of an unsung hero in Sai Kung. She has been unpaid organiser of the non-profit operation for 20 years.
“We started in 1996 with 59 tables,”she said. “Now we have 190 filling the entire covered car park.” Jean said tables at the garage sales are mostly taken up, but if you register with her quickly, you can still get in. Each table costs $100 a day for people selling things like second-hand goods, home-made produce, handicrafts and artwork. Commercial operators pay $220 per table.
Jean said, “Each garage sale is different as vendors change. People come from all four corners in Sai Kung and Clearwater Bay and the rest of Hong Kong, even some from the mainland.
Over the years it is interesting to see items being passed around. One child’s wicker table with chairs has appeared for sale three times by different people.” Brownies, Girl Guides, Scouts and schoolchildren take part, so do charities.
Food and drinks are offered by vendors and the University Parents Community, which supports the Busy Bee Kindergarten on the campus.
