Molly Highfield, an 18-year-old Sai Kung resident, has won the girls division of the Singapore Youth Laser Radial Championship.
Representing Sai Kung’s J-Asia sailing club, Molly raced with both boys and girls in identical one-class yachts over four days. Ranking of the sexes was calculated separately and Molly won among the girls. “It was close racing against another girl and I only overtook her in the last lap,” Molly said.
Recently with a large team from J-Asia, including her sister, Molly competed in the World Laser 4.7 Youth Championships at Kiel, Germany. Now she has Olympic hopes: If she can finish near the top in the 2018 World Sailing Championship in Aarhus, Denmark, Molly has a chance of qualifying for the Hong Kong Olympic team to go to Tokyo. She said it is complicated and down in the end to the Hong Kong sailing authorities. It is some years, Molly said, since a dinghy sailor has represented Hong Kong at the Olympics. Many Hong Kong boys and girls are also competing for the honour.
The J-Asia sailing club, active most weekends in Sai Kung waters, is coached by Marek Nostitz-Jackowski.
