Ho Chung shelter for 110 dogs may not survive into New Year because of funding crisis

Doubt hangs over the future of Sai Kung Stray Friends because it hasn’t got the funding to carry on into 2018, Founder Narelle Pamuk said. The core problem is the “tortuous” rent of the Ho Chung dog shelter at $55,000 a month. “We are desperate to find support. ”
You can help in a small way by turning up at the 26 November BBQ and family fair or in a big way by sponsoring the rent. Narelle said if 55 people signed up to autopay $1000 a month, the dog shelter could survive. “We have so many issues with the landlord trying to get us out. If people would help us meet the rent we could carry on for another four years (the length of the lease).”

One hundred and ten dogs live at the kennels at the end of Tai Lam Wu Road, Ho Chung. Until recently they had nowhere to run around. Now Narelle said a kind man has bought land adjacent to the shelter where the dogs can exercise. This raises the rent by $7500.
Fences need to be built so the dogs can use the new land. This is one of the fund-raising reasons for the pre-Christmas party next weekend. Entry will cost $100 for adults and $20 for children. There will be vegetarian, alcohol and gift stalls, party bags for kids, a jazz band, treasure hunt and a visit by Santa Claus. The fair starts at 12:30 pm on land next to the shelter.
Total monthly costs at SKSF run to $140 — $150,000 a month, depending on vet bills, Narelle said. Fund-raising and sponsorship of dogs help meet the bills. “We just need kind people to help us pay the rent.”
