The Emerald Bay facilities of the Victoria Recreation Club will be open to the public on Sunday 19 November for the Autumn Challenge swimming races. The club has large leafy grounds sweeping down to the sea where swimmers will be churning up the waters on a 1.4 km course that can be seen from the shore. Visitors will be able to dine and drink with family or friends and watch the action.
Bill Thorley is one of the favourites to win, Robert Cook, club general manager, said. Bill’s recent swimming victories include the Queensland Open, New South Wales 10 km title and the Deepwater Bay Clean-Half marathon.
Robert said about 100 swimmers, men, women and children, will compete over one or three laps of the 1.4 km course in the waters of Emerald Bay. This will be between 10:00 am and 12:30 pm, but the club will be open for partying all day.
Last year Temana Short won the 4 km event and Jade Saunders the 1.5 km.
