An art fair will be held on Sai Kung streets on 9 and 10 December 2017. It will be a splendid affair, only the second of its kind, let down by poor public relations by organisers Sai Kung District Office, the Council and Community Centre.
The first such art fair, this time last year, was captured by photographer Mike Kennedy. Dozens of canopied booths appeared on the Tin Hau Temple forecourt and on red-brick Mei Yuen Street. It was a family friendly scene — “non-political and non-sexual”, the organisers insist. There were displays by painters, sculptors, graffiti artists, craft artisans, potters and art photographers. They demonstrated their work and invited passers-by to join in.
The whole thing was quite brilliant, a display of Sai Kung’s strong community spirit. The organisation is excellent except for the promotion or lack of it. The District Council is so lackadaisical its website is promoting the 2016 art fair. Message to Chairman George Ng: Not good enough.
The street art show will be open from 12:30 – 6:00 pm on those days. There will also be an in-door exhibition at the Town Hall which runs from 8 – 12 December, 11:00 am – 8:00 pm.
Booth operators are sponsored: $250 per day for “materials costs”. Interested artists are asked to contact Jerry Chau at the District Community Centre 2798 9037 or Vivicia Lau at the District Office 3740 5309. Selling at the booths is not permitted.
