The China Coast Marathon will see hundreds of runners set off from the Pak Tam Chung barrier at 8:00 am on Sunday 28 January. They will pound around the reservoir service roads in what the Observatory is predicting will be chilly weather, then race back to the finish at the same barrier.
The Athletic Veterans of Hong Kong event is one of the toughest marathons because of the hilly terrain. The Athletic Veterans sniff at the Standard Chartered Marathon. Too crowded and polluted. The China Coast Marathon is a runner’s run organised by runners, they say. Kevin Ball holds the course record, 2 hrs 38 mins, a time that reflects the event’s ruggedness. Last year Etienne Rodriquez won the marathon in 2 hrs 46 mins with Yip Tung-hoi runner-up in 2 hrs 54 mins. Fastest finisher of the half-marathon was Matthew Clarke in 1 hr 15 mins with Samuel Fletcher 3 mins behind him.
The Athletic Veterans recorded 567 finishers last year. They do not give separate results for women. Entry is now closed.
Residents should note that there will be restricted access to the Country Park at Pak Tam Chung at certain times from 6:00 – 11:00 am Sunday morning.

I ran in the first CCM, then called the Coast of China Marathon, in 1981. Andy Blunier, the organiser, invited Ron Hill, the world famous runner without telling him that it was not a traditional course but a “bit hilly”. Ron won the event with his slowest ever time and was a bit pissed off. The course was then from the Outward Bound school, back down Tai Mong Tsai Road to the roundabout, right along Sai Sha Road to Ngai Chung (then the end of the road), back again and out to the far High Island dam, back again and down the other side of the reservoir to the end of the road and finally back again to the OBS. After finishing, many of us went to the HK 7s at the HKFC in our CCM T shirts and got pissed. OnOn.
