The 24-hour dinghy race at the Hebe Haven Yacht, a multi-faceted charity event, continues today, 30 September. For two days the club throws open its doors to the public. You can go with family and friends to eat and drink there, buying vouchers at the bar.
Yesterday the clubhouse was packed. The two Chrises were there, Ponniah and Hanselman, luminaries of Resurrection Church next door. Out on the club’s forecourt by the sea 60 colourful booths were set up, offering more food and drink. There was a bouncy castle for the toddlers and a gokart track for kids a little older. Hand-crafts were on sale. Charities offered wares to raise funds. Sailability, our local charity providing yacht training for the disabled, was selling t-shirts and caps. The ever-energetic Narelle Pamuk attended the Sai Kung Stray Friends booth that was offering stuffed toys. HHYC General Manager Lisa Keatley strode about keeping an eye on her realm. Near the bandstand where a Cantonese band was performing, one rather good singer, a guitarist and a clown drumming on a wooden box, a forecourt bustled with drinkers and eaters. They all looked happy, surrounded by booths with even more burgers and beers to tuck into, enjoying the music and the view of the action at sea.
Out on the water, youngsters were experiencing a variety of watercraft, kayaks, canoes, SUP (stand-up paddle) skiffs and a dragonboat. This was close inshore. Further out the dinghy racing was going on around a marked course, watched by officials and safety staff. The sailing was good in calm sunny conditions. The race continues until 2:00 pm today, but the partying will go on long into the night.
