Maitreyi Karanth, a resident of Clearwater Bay, has been presenting comedy shows in Lan Kwai Fung for some time; now she is branching out to Kowloon.
Maitreyi, an actor and producer, took up stand-up comedy as an extension of her real life persona, at the age of 44. Being married and having lived outside India for 22 years, first in the Middle East and now in Hong Kong, she has a collected a treasure chest of funny experiences across different geographies and cultures.
After her very second open mike she was spotted by Saurabh Pant, who was then touring Hong Kong, and asked to open for him. Since then she has opened for Tom Cotter, Gina Yashere, Atul Khatri, Amit Tandon, Saurabh Pant (again), Tom Rhodes and Sean Patton. She has also performed in Bangkok, Singapore and India as a featured comedian.
Currently Maitreyi is producing her own show called laugh Kwai Fong, where she has had back to back sell out shows.
On 7 June she presents what she hopes will be the start of a new venture – The Deepak Chadran Show at the Legends of India in Prat Avenue, Tsim Sha Tsui. Tickets are $300 and the show starts at 8:30 pm. Drinks are $50.
Deepak Chandran’s rise in the world of stand-up comedy has been nothing short of spectacular; he’s now a regular headliner across both South and Southeast Asia, as well as an established host at Comedy Masala Singapore. Deepak’s comedy is mostly observational, with a twist of politics, issues with middle class life and of course, his life as an IT engineer.
Also taking part will be Mike Harrington. Mike is a consultant by day, comic by night and 24/7 spicy food enthusiast. Dubbed the ‘Masala Man’, he developed his sense of humour as an American stumbling his way around the world, eventually finding the stage to be the best place to stay out of trouble. After cutting his teeth in front of audiences in Hong Kong, Mike brought his mike to Mumbai, a place he now calls fantastically funny—and home.
