Anthony’s Ranch has reopened in Sai Kung to the delight of its fans who like the music videos, sociable L-shaped bar and friendly staff. When we popped in to congratulate owner Candy Sweet and her team, the bar was crowded with happy patrons making a lot of noise and the music videos could not be heard over the din.
It did seem like the good old days. EJ was back behind the bar, Hostess Candy was considerately looking after her customers, a certain golf club boss was monopolising the music video keyboard between slugs of beer, and the restaurant had been brightened up with internal neon signs. The late Anthony Blair Sweet, Candy’s husband who founded Anthony’s Ranch, would have approved.
A new chef, formerly of Momentai, is on board and we expect the big helpings of American-style food will be just as richly tasty as they were before the Ranch was closed, because of licensing issues we understand, many months ago.
As we are talking about American food, a quote from Mark Twain:
“Foreigners cannot enjoy our food, I suppose, any more than we can enjoy theirs. It is not strange; for tastes are made not born. I might glorify my bill of fare until I was tired; but after all the Scotchman would shake his head and say, ‘Where’s your haggis?’ and the Maori would sigh and say, ‘Where’s your missionary? ‘”
