Seven cats to entertain admirers in Sai Kung’s new purrfect cafe

Three Sai Kung characters, Nelson Lau, Kayla Cheung and Frankie Koo, have opened the purrfect cafe. Coffee Cat is on Po Tung Road a few doors west of SingaLing. Seven cats belonging to Nelson and Kayla, who are a couple, will soon take up residence on the restaurant’s mezzanine floor. Here they will be available for petting. Rum Tum Tugger, Rumpleteezer and Mr Mistoffelees would approve. Macavity will not be there.

Cats must always be treated with respect. They are independent and idiosyncratic. Terry Pratchett wrote, “In ancient times cats were worshipped as Gods. They have not forgotten this.” Many deluded feline fanciers think that when their pet brings a bird or a mouse home and puts it at their feet, the animal has brought them a gift. Fools. The cat is saying, If you don’t look after me the way I expect and feed me the food I like, you are going to be just as dead as this mouse or bird.

Coffee Cat is a feminine place, Kayla’s influence very much in evidence. The walls are pink, some of the food is pink (pasta $128). Kayla and her boyfriend Nelson drew the cat pictures on the walls themselves. The cats for petting or just admiring from a respectful distance will be on the mezzanine floor because of Hong Kong’s antiquated hygiene laws. Downstairs Kayla, Nelson and Frankie will prepare food for their cat fancying customers. Caesar salad, pork belly with rice, ball ball sausage, cheese brothers, steaks and of course spaghetti bolognese. Garfield would also approve.

Coffee Cat is open now. Nelson said the seven cats move in to entertain admirers next week.
