Lunchtime today (23/4), police received a report stating that a porcupine was killed by an animal trap in Yung Shue O, Sai Kung. Officers arrived at the scene to investigate and found that the porcupine was entangled with steel wire and suspected that it had been strangled. The SPCA took the body for further examination .
According to online media, a couple were hiking through Yung Shue O location this morning and saw the porcupine lying beside a papaya tree. On looking closer they saw a steel wire wrapped around the porcupine and that it was dead. They called the SPCA around 12:20 pm who sent a member of staff to the location. They then notified the police. The SPCA staff took the body away for further investigation.
According to the Regulations on Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, anyone who cruelly treats animals cruelly, or kills them can be fined up to $200,000 and imprisoned for 3 years.
