Now that the coronavirus epidemic seems to be running it course, the Government is thinking what to do with the 1000+ units it has built at the five quarantine sites.

So far it has added at least about 100,000 square metres to the Lei Yue Mun Park Resort Stadium, Sai Kung Outdoor Recreation Centre, the Mini Soccer Stadium, Junior Police Call Permanent Activity Centre and government land in Penny’s Bay. Some 1,000 quarantine units have been built in the last few months, but with the epidemic levelling off, the  isolation facilities may not be needed in the future. “Sing Tao Daily” reported that to avoid waste, the authorities have started to study the use of the facilities after the epidemic, including  the conversion of the relevant units into transitional housing to alleviate the pressure of current public housing needs.

The relevant units may be temporarily handed over to the Housing and Transportation Bureau, or reassembled elsewhere for temporary housing purposes. According to sources, the units already have water and electricity supply, as well as air-conditioning connections. To not re-use them will entail a large waste disposal problem.
