French Bulldogs Lola and Boomer have won the hearts of hundreds of fans, Catherine Lumsden said, as they have battled parvo virus in hospital at Sai Kung’s Pets Central. The founder of Catherine’s Puppies said the pair are doing well and will be available for homing after she has personally given them home care as they recover from the serious illness. Catherine has chronicled the struggle for survival of Lola, two months, and Boomer, four months, on social media. “Over 500 people have come forward to adopt them,” Catherine said. “We’ve never ever seen such a response.”

Lola and Boomer were abandoned separately in Tin Shui Wai by a breeder because they were sick, Catherine believes. A villager contacted Sai Kung dog rescuer Debbie Chow. Debbie handed the cute pair to Catherine, who runs a shelter in the hills above Sai Kung. Both puppies were vomiting, suffering from diarrhea and weak. Catherine suspected parvo and the vet confirmed it.

Lola and Boomer are two of the latest beneficiaries of Catherine’s Puppies. The shelter needs donations from people who care about animals and appreciate the good work being done every day. Every month it costs about $45,000 to run the shelter: rent, staff, dog food, cleaning materials etc. On top of that the shelter has a vet bill now standing at about $45,000 and a debt of $15,000 at Jennifer’s Happy Paws in Sai Kung. Catherine said Jennifer is a big supporter of the shelter. To donate to Catherine’s Puppies see below.

Volunteers are also needed to walk the 67 dogs in the shelter at 7 Tai Lam Wu Road, bathe them and “socialise with them, making their lives better”. The shelter also wants a handyman. “67 dogs can do a lot of damage in a very short time.”

It has been a good year for adoptions and fostering, Catherine said, because people are staying home. She has found homes for nine adult dogs and 46 puppies to date.  The shelter is crowded, however, and more people are sought to adopt and foster. Eight puppies are ready for homing today and they can be viewed at Pets Central.

On the daily financial battle, Catherine, said, “We are struggling and sadly with no end date to the crisis and no ways to generate funds, we really need help.” She seeks ideas for fundraising that do not involve crowds of people.

There are two main donation methods to support Catherine’s Puppies. You can pay into the shelter’s account at HSBC Pets Central Sai Kung 400 157 848 001. Or you can go to https://gogetfunding.com/catherines-puppies-shelter-sos/
