Unauthorised road building in Shan Liu threatens landslides

Local residents of Shan Liu village, high above Sai Kung town, have notified BUZZ of what they allege is illegal road building in the area. They claim that the Government work at home rule has given some people an excuse to commit what could be an environmental disaster by bulldozing a road down from Shan Liu to some houses below.

The construction site is completely open with no lights, no notices and no barriers.  It looks like no planning either.  The close cutting of the road into the lower part of the lower village main access road is a recipe for a landslide.  The nearby carpark experienced a landslide two months ago and this wiped out one car and damaged two others.  Now the area has the chance to lose the whole access road.

The photos tell the story.  The construction crew just bulldozed through the area knocking down the Government land sign and the barrier fence, erected by the Government, to stop this very thing from happening.

The matter has already been reported to the police but no one from the Lands Department, or Sai Kung Council has been up to see it.  The geotechnical risks need to be figured out as well. Its been raining for many days and mud is everywhere. The landslide risk is evident.
