Visitor casualties mount in Sai Kung country and marine parks as Hong Kong has its hottest May day ever

A number of accidents happened in the Sai Kung Country Parks over the weekend as many tourists flocked to the area to escape the hottest May day since records began.

Last night (23/5) a 49-year-old woman surnamed was diving with her friend off Kung Chau near Tap Mun in Saigon last night. Around 10:00 pm, she was found unresponsive underwater. Her friend immediately brought her to land and called the police. Marine police arrived at the scene and rushed the woman to Ma Liu Shui Marine Police Base, where she was transferred by ambulance to Prince of Wales Hospital in Sha Tin for emergency treatment, where she died. The police are investigating the case.

At 11:30 the same morning, a 72-year-old man and three friends went hiking on Sharp Island. Whilst walking, he suspected that he was unwell due to heatstroke. He fell and was injured and his friends called the called the police for help. The Government Flying Service helicopter was dispatched and the conscious victim was sent to the Eastern District Hospital for treatment.

A 4-year-old girl was pulled from the water at Clear Water Bay Second Beach yesterday afternoon. A nearby swimmer lifted her up from the water near the shore of No. 2 Lifeguard Pavilion but she was unconscious. At that time, the girl had no life jacket or other floatation aids. Other swimmers raised their hands to call the lifeguards. Several lifeguards rushed to give first aid to the girl, and the life-saving bell was sounded. Her distraught parents accompanied the girl to the hospital.
