BUZZ team member and his wife were nearly killed in a head-on collision by driver distracted by mobile phone in one of these.
The blue Porsche Cayenne swerved onto the wrong side of Tai Mong Tsai Rd. If we had been two seconds earlier in our red Audi the idiot could have killed us. The wife said, “He’s distracted by his mobile phone”. As we have no dashcam, there was nothing we could do. The incident was over too quickly to note the number plate. Every time now we see a blue Porsche Cayenne in Sai Kung we wonder was that the expletive who nearly killed us in a head-on collision.
We asked the Police Public Relations Bureau what the force was doing about such dangerous driving. PPRB came back and said from January to September 2021 the police have taken enforcement action in 18,965 cases: private cars 8461, motorcycles 50, goods vehicles 10,040, taxis 234, minibuses 39, buses 74 and others 67.
The PPRB duty officer said the police “will take rigorous enforcement action against inattentive and dangerous driving”, aiming to eradicate such irresponsible driving behaviour.
About four years ago a BUZZ team member stood on the pavement outside Bacco on Man Nin St and watched drivers going through the busy pedestrian crossing point. We counted off 100 vehicles and saw three drivers holding mobiles in their hand while driving. One was tapping something into it.
Three out of 100 at the time. Not too bad. But we believe the situation is getting worse as we see people becoming more and more addicted to their umbilical cord devices.
