Hoi Ha Wan Marine Park is a popular place for diving and other activities
Two more swimming accidents occurred in Sai Kung over the holiday weekend. One, sadly fatal, happened at Hoi Ha Wan; the other at Trio Beach.
At about 12:00 noon yesterday, a 34-year-old man surnamed went swimming with his friends in Ha Hoi Wan. He got into difficulties and his friends suspected that he was drowning. They immediately rescued him and reported to the police for help. The victim was then taken to Eastern District Hospital by helicopter, but was confirmed dead on arrival.
After preliminary investigation, the police believe that he drowned while swimming, and the cause of his death is to be determined after an autopsy.
Later the same day, around 6:00 pm, police received a report that a middle-aged man was drowning at Trio Beach. It is understood that the lifeguards found a man unconscious while snorkelling 5 metres from the shore, and when they got him to the beach he had stopped breathing. The lifeguard service at Trio Beach is from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm. Fortunately, the lifeguards were still on duty and they gave first aid to the drowned man in time and he regained semi-consciousness. After the 57-year-old man was resuscitated, he was taken by the marine police boat to the nearby Sai Kung marine police base, and then sent to the Eastern District Hospital by helicopter for treatment where he is recovering.
The cause of the incident is still under investigation by the police.
There have been a spate of similar accidents, many fatal, in Sai Kung over the past few months, many blamed on pre-existing health problems.
