Local social media has been abuzz with the heroism and quick thinking for the rescue of a tourist who fell into the sea whilst taking selfies at Lung Ha Wan (Lobster Bay), Sai Kung. A hiker uploaded two video clips to a Facebook group showing an unconscious woman floating 10 metres off the shore at , with the fisherman swinging his rod and trying to pull her back. The man hauled her closer and shouted for help to drag her to shore. Another man gave him a hand and they managed to bring her to safety, despite fierce waves and slippery rocks.
The incident took place at the popular tourist spot on Christmas Day but has only just come to the attention of the public after it two videos were uploaded to the Facebook group “Friends of Hong Kong Hiking and Hiking”. No details were given as to when and where the incident occurred, but Government Flying Services have now confirmed them.

The first video is about three minutes long. In the film, the victim, wearing a yellow coat, is floating in the sea. After being spotted by a fisherman onshore, he snagged the victim with the fishhook, slowly tightened the fishing line and pulled her back to the shore, and then worked with others to pull her back to the shore. She was successfully rescued but was unconscious. At the end of the film, she seemed to gradually regain consciousness.
The second video is about a minute long. A Government Flying Service helicopter with the word “BLVD” written on its fuselage hoisted the female victim onto the helicopter. After being rescued, the victim was conscious and uninjured, but felt unwell due to cold and dizziness, and was sent to East District Hospital.
A woman onlooker in the video said: “She would definitely have died without the fishing rod being used.” Netizens praised the fisherman for his kindness, saying it was lucky he was on the spot.
After the video was uploaded to social platforms, many netizens commented and praised the act of saving a life, “Thank you brother, good deeds are good”, “Good people have good rewards”, “This fisherman deserves a medal for bravery”, etc. At the same time, some netizens expressed , “Walking around the gate of hell, let’s see if you have learned your lesson”, “I hang on to clock in all day long, until I die”, “The boy who holds his life” and so on (online translations).
