Officers from the East Kowloon Regional Traffic Department Task Force conducted an operation to crack down on drivers who were suspended from driving in Sai Kung district yesterday morning (11/9).

During the operation, officers intercepted a suspicious private car near University Road on Clear Water Bay Road. Preliminary investigations revealed that a 60-year-old male driver was arrested for suspected “driving while suspended” and “driving without third-party insurance.” He has been released on bail pending further investigation and is required to report to the police in mid-March.

The police reiterated that “driving while suspended” and “driving without third-party insurance” are serious traffic offences, punishable by a maximum fine of HK$10,000, a 12-month driving suspension, and a 12-month imprisonment. The police stated they will continue to strengthen enforcement to combat these offences and urged drivers not to break the law.

The taxi stand at East Dam, Sai Kung

On Tuesday (10/2) a 45-year-old taxi driver was fined HK$3,000 after pleading guilty at Kwun Tong Magistrates’ Courts to overcharging mainland visitors by more than HK$100 for a trip from Sai Kung’s High Island Reservoir East Dam.

Police conducted an operation against taxi irregularities at the East Dam taxi stand when an officer noticed the driver speaking with four mainland travellers. They asked to go to University Station or Sha Tin Station, but the driver refused and said he would only drive to Futian Port for a flat HK$500 fare. The four got into the taxi.

Officers stopped the vehicle near Pak Tam Chung PHAB Site shortly afterwards. The driver admitted the offense, telling police he did so because taxi business had been poor and asked for another chance.

Police calculations showed the journey of about 50.6 kilometres should have cost HK$393.7 under the metered rate.
