The founder of Sai Kung’s No. 1 newspaper, SAI KUNG BUZZ, Roger Medcalf, celebrated his birthday* in Sai Kung’s No 1 pub, Poet’s, on 7 April.  It was held over lunchtime so that he could get home in time for his afternoon nap!

Roger, no longer Editor – (to avoid arrest?) – still contributes entertaining scuttlebutt and scurrilous drivel to amuse his gullible readers. He is believed to be the author of an Auckland Herald agony aunt column under the by-line Miss Onion giving advice on such matters as dogging – or perhaps sheeping? – and other deviant sexual activities practiced by Kiwis.

According to Roger, “The party was splendid. Everybody I wanted to show did, except Robin Bradbeer, current Editor, in the Philippines, and Catherine Tromans, who was rescuing another animal; Salve Bradbeer and Sebastian, an attractive couple; Guy Shirra, who did most of the talking; Jill Robinson, who’s latest news about Animals Asia BUZZ had just published; Rob Hayes, a scientist for Amazon; Geraldine and Mike Kennedy, devout Catholics; Philip Lam, a former police chief inspector and Sir Murray MacLehose’s favourite bodyguard — “it’s the cheeky grin,” I said; my better half, Katherine, who turned on a lovely mix of cheeses; and Rose, doyen of Poet’s staff, brought out a cake on the house. Ben and Lindsay Casey turned up with their rambunctious kids, Riley and Callum; Marion, who’s even older than I am; and Datta and Ruth from Big Fish.

I insisted Rose sit and have a drink with us. She did – a Bailey’s”.

* He was 80, but don’t tell anyone.
