Distinguished scientist and amputee John Fowler dies

John Fowler, distinguished scientist, man about town with wife Sandy and unlucky amputee, has died. A wake was held for him on 22 May in Poet’s, Sai Kung, with Sandy and friends toasting his memory.

Before illness struck him down, John was manager of the Soil & Rock Laboratory of Gammon Construction at Tseung Kwan O. The laboratory conducts tests essential for geotechnical work such as slope stabilisation, tunnel works and foundation works.

John was a heavy smoker and drinker whose legs developed gangrene so doctors amputated them. His lovely wife Sandy devotedly looked after him helping him in and out of his wheelchair. He would turn up at Poet’s window in his wheelchair, still smoking and drinking.

Old friends remember John at the Poets wake

RIP John, a good-hearted man whose luck ran out.
